Kansas City drinking starts with Drastic Measures, Outstanding Bar (Semifinalist) at the James Beard Awards 2026, and the bench behind it runs deep: we list 14 active bars across the city. The 10 below are our pick of them. Every listing below is verified by BarMagazine, with addresses, opening hours and the signature drinks worth ordering.

    Cocktail Bar

    Drastic Measures

Drastic Measures is a cocktail bar on Nieman Road in Shawnee, on the Kansas side of Kansas City, and the only bar to appear three times on the James Beard Outstanding Bar lists between 2023 and 2026, as a nominee in 2023 and a semifinalist in 2024 and 2026. The house old fashioned, the Measured Approach, blends bourbon and aged rum with barbecued apple and demerara, and the Clout Catcher puts Tanqueray 10 with Lillet, amontillado and bison grass vodka.

  3. Goat & Rabbit
    Cocktail Bar

    Goat & Rabbit

Goat & Rabbit takes its name from the Goats and Rabbits, the rival factions of Tom Pendergast and Joe Shannon in early twentieth century Kansas City, and the bar sits close enough to the state line that it sets out to be home to Missourians and Kansans alike. The team points to the craftsmanship in the locally made spirits it serves, the eco friendly wines it pours, and the house made syrups, cordials, craft cocktails and non alcoholic drinks it creates. House cocktails range from clarified goat cheese gin with lavender pear to blue spirulina tequila with Japanese plum wine and lychee. The room is 21+ only and also runs a coffee service.

  5. Percheron Rooftop Bar
    Rooftop Bar

    Percheron Rooftop Bar

Percheron sits on the roof of the Crossroads Hotel and calls itself the city's go to spot for skyline views, cold cocktails and coastal fare. The name comes from the powerful horses that once paced this former brewery, and the bar says the rooftop keeps that same spirited energy alive. Drinks run to patio spritzes, frozen craft cocktails, wine and cold beer, poured alongside bright Eastern Mediterranean plates built for sharing, from house made pita and mezze to charred skewers and wood fired flatbreads. The deck welcomes all ages until eight in the evening and turns 21+ after that. Most seating is first come, first served and walk ins are encouraged.

  8. The Monarch Bar
    Cocktail Bar

    The Monarch Bar

The Monarch Bar practices what it calls the art of hospitality and refined service, pairing creativity and precision in cocktails and small plates it describes as locally crafted yet internationally inspired. Its Migration Menu, built by head bartender Michael Hall, follows the migratory patterns and flight paths of monarch butterflies, so each drink sits along the regional route its spirits and ingredients come from, printed with the glassware used and the coordinates of that location. Guests unsure where to start can name a style, a flavor and a preferred glass and let the bartenders build something. The venue spans the main bar, the Monarch Terrace and the Parlour, and business casual attire is recommended.

  9. Wild Child
    Cocktail Bar

    Wild Child

Wild Child opened on Johnson Drive in downtown Shawnee in the summer of 2023, on the Kansas side of Kansas City and a few doors from Drastic Measures, and it built its name on treating the zero proof half of the list as seriously as the full proof half. The team strips the alcohol out of popular spirits in house so that familiar recipes and flavors stay within reach of anyone who has stopped drinking, and those pours sit on the menu beside the cocktails rather than beneath them. Wine, a Tuesday flight night and a room of warm wood paneling and better than fifty plants round it out. Reservations and private parties are booked through the site.
