Budapest drinks in two registers: the bars of the inner districts and the rooftops above the Danube. The best bars in Budapest gather in District VII, the old Jewish Quarter, where Szimpla Kert still fills a stripped-back old factory building with bars, and neighboring Terézváros. Many lists lean on Hungarian produce, from apricot pálinka at St. Andrea Wine & Skybar off Vörösmarty tér to Kadarka Wine Bar, which keeps about 100 bottles open. Boutiq' Bar, No. 43 on The World's 50 Best Bars in 2012, has helped shape the city's cocktails for more than 15 years. The roof gives a full circle of views over Pest toward Parliament and the Buda hills, and the bar serves signature and classic cocktails, homemade lemonades and burgers, with DJs. In the colder months the terrace is fitted with heated igloos for groups, so it trades all year.

    Cintányéros is a corner wine bar on Bókay János utca in the eighth district, behind the Corvin Quarter, opened by Imre Molnár in 2016 and hung with old photographs. House wines from Lake Balaton and Villány are poured by the carafe or as spritzers, next to natural wines from small producers in Mátra and Bükk. Hungarian cheese and charcuterie and a Reuben sandwich named after the street are served with them.

    The Duchess is a cocktail bar on the roof of Matild Palace, the Váci utca palace that now houses a Luxury Collection hotel. Guests look for a side door marked with a key and ride up in the building's historic lift to an Art Deco room designed by London's MKV Design, with a terrace facing Elisabeth Bridge, the Danube and Gellért Hill. The list of about sixteen signature drinks, with and without alcohol, is themed on Archduchess Maria Klotild, the palace's namesake, and her travels.
