Upstairs, Schneider runs Guzzle, a louder room of highballs and bar snacks built around bold flavours; downstairs, Gokan operates Sip, a refined Japanese-inspired cocktail bar with the precision and elegance of his Asia-defining work. 2. Death & Co (East Village)
Death & Co opened on New Year’s Eve 2006 at 433 East 6th Street and effectively wrote the template every modern American cocktail bar has been building from since. The 2010 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards delivered both World’s Best Cocktail Menu and Best American Cocktail Bar; James Beard Outstanding Bar nominations have followed in waves. No menu, no signage, and a front-door instruction that reads ‘Please Wait To Be Greeted.’ Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy opened this 134 Eldridge Street bar in 2012 as the spiritual successor to Milk & Honey, and bartenders still build every drink in conversation with the guest. Ask for something citrus-forward and spirit-driven and you may receive Sam Ross’s Penicillin, the modern classic he created at the original Milk & Honey in the mid-2000s. Attaboy climbed twelve places to No. 72 on the 2025 World’s 50 Best and sits at No. 37 on North America’s 50 Best 2026. Open seven nights a week until 3am. 5. Schmuck (East Village)
Moe Aljaff and Juliette Larrouy opened Schmuck at 97 First Avenue on 29 January 2025 after their amicable departure from Two Schmucks in Barcelona. Twelve months later it debuted at No. 4 on North America’s 50 Best Bars and won the Three Cents Best New Opening Award; the World’s 50 Best 2025 extended list also placed it at No. 59. The programme balances playfulness, with peanut-forward drinks laced with chilli oil and tomato-touched highballs, against a Mid-Century, Space Age, Brutalist living-room aesthetic and a service philosophy that refuses to take itself seriously. 6. Superbueno (East Village)
Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Jimenez and Greg Boehm built this neon-lit Mexican-American bar at 13 First Avenue, and it spent two years at No. 2 on North America’s 50 Best (2024 and 2025) before settling at No. 9 for 2026, plus No. 12 on the 2025 World’s 50 Best, the highest-ranked U.S. bar that year. The cocktail programme bridges Mexico City street flavours with high-specification technique: try the Green Mango Martini, inspired by NYC subway fruit carts, or the Roasted Corn Sour dusted with charred corn powder. Lucha Libre murals, relentless energy, and drinks that hit harder than they have any right to.
7. Martiny’s (Gramercy)
Takuma Watanabe, formerly head bartender at Angel’s Share, opened this three-floor cocktail bar inside a historic carriage house at 121 East 17th Street in April 2022. A Clemente fresco arches over the entrance stairwell; murals by the same hand sweep around the main bar. After debuting at No. 11 on North America’s 50 Best 2025 with the Three Cents Best New Opening Award, Clemente Bar held a strong second-year position at No. 15 for 2026. The cocktail programme matches the restraint of the room: seasonal, plant-leaning, precisely composed.
9. Seed Library (NoMad)
Ryan Chetiyawardana, known globally as Mr Lyan, opened this second Seed Library on the lower ground floor of Hotel Park Ave (444 Park Avenue South) in late 2025, with its own street entrance off NoMad. The menu adapts London Seed Library signatures to New York flavours, and the project is a three-way collaboration with Lore Group and Renwick Hospitality. The room debuted at No. 66 on the 2026 North America’s 50 Best Bars 51-100 list. Given Chetiyawardana’s resume across Lyaness, Dandelyan and the original Seed Library in Shoreditch, expect that number to climb.
10. Overstory (Financial District)
Bar Director Harrison Ginsberg runs the cocktail programme on the 64th floor of 70 Pine Street, one floor above SAGA, in a 1930s Art Deco landmark. Garibaldis and Sazeracs are built around New York terroir (local honey, Hudson Valley fruit, rooftop herbs), while a wraparound terrace with 360-degree skyline views and a glittering disco ball set a tone that’s celebratory without tipping into nightclub territory. Ranked No. 6 on North America’s 50 Best 2025 and No. 33 in 2026, plus No. 46 on the 2025 World’s 50 Best, Overstory proves that a bar with a view can also be a bar with a point.
