Every card here is in Lisbon or Porto, and the best bars in Portugal start with a speakeasy hidden inside another bar. Red Frog, created by Emanuel Minez and Paulo Gomes, sits behind Monkey Mash on Praça da Alegria in Príncipe Real, channels a Prohibition-era New York speakeasy, and puts sea fennel in its gimlet and banana in its negroni; it was No. 40 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2022. In Porto's Bonfim, Terraplana became a fixed stop near Belas Artes almost overnight, with a roomy, shaded terrace out back and a house Terraplana Café of coffee liqueur, vodka, espresso, sugar syrup and a pinch of salt. Lisbon's own liqueur is ginjinha, made from bitter cherries and served hot or cold, sometimes in a chocolate cup. Red Frog recommends booking ahead. These are the eight we would start with.

Founded in May 2015 as, by its own account, the first speakeasy on the Iberian Peninsula, Red Frog relocated after 2020 into the building of sister bar Monkey Mash, behind the press-for-cocktails doorbell. Named for Red Frog Island in Panama, it pours modernist takes on the classics with Portuguese ingredients; a five-time World's 50 Best entrant, peaking at No.40 in 2022. Reservations essential.
Alf del Portillo and Marta Premoli's Basque-Italian bar in São Cristóvão, opened late 2021, spritzes, negronis, sherries, Italian vermouths and amaro cocktails, Basque sidra poured from the barrel, and pintxos on the counter. Small room; walk-ins only, groups of six at most.

Big Bad Bank is the cocktail bar in the ZERO Box Lodge building in downtown Porto, right next to the O Carniceiro restaurant. Its counter is faced with tile panels hand painted by artist Paulo Ramuni, and opposite sits a vault from the former Banco Mello, lined with carpet by Diogo Muñoz that recreates the tile panels of Porto's churches. The drinks list centers on signature cocktails.
The cocktail bar of Ljubomir Stanisic's 100 Maneiras, on a steep lane in the Bairro Alto, run as its own room with its own list.
Established in 2004, Cinco Lounge has been a destination for cocktail lovers in Príncipe Real for more than twenty years, over fifty classics and signatures on the list, plus workshops, private events and even a takeaway cocktail program. One of the rooms where Lisbon's modern cocktail culture grew up.
