The 20th Annual Spirited Awards honored the world’s top bars, bartenders, and writers, with David Wondrich receiving the Helen David Lifetime Achievement Award in New Orleans on July 23, 2026.
The Spirited Awards 2026 turned a milestone anniversary into a global victory lap for the modern cocktail movement, with Tales of the Cocktail Foundation handing out its 20th class of trophies across international, U.S., and writing categories. The ceremony, held in partnership with Food & Wine at the Tales of the Cocktail conference in New Orleans on July 23, 2026, capped two decades of an awards program that has become the industry’s most closely watched barometer of talent, taste, and momentum.
Winners were selected by a panel of more than 250 industry judges chaired by Tiffanie Barriere and Ryan Chetiyawardana, with regional co-chairs coordinating nominations across Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and Africa, Canada, and three U.S. regions. “On the 20th Anniversary of Spirited Awards, it is remarkable to look back and see not only how far our industry has come, but to celebrate the bars, bartenders, writers, and industry icons who have shaped the modern resurgence of cocktail culture globally over the past twenty years,” said Charlotte Voisey, Executive Director of Tales of the Cocktail Foundation.
Global Category Highlights
Singapore’s FURA took World’s Best Bar, presented by Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, a fitting result for a venue whose sustainability-driven program leans hard into future-food thinking and low-waste technique. Hong Kong’s Allegory at the Eaton Hotel claimed World’s Best Cocktail Menu, and Tlecān in Mexico City was named World’s Best Spirits Selection, a nod to the agave-obsessed cellar that has made it a pilgrimage stop for spirits geeks. Bruichladdich The Laddie Rye 7 Year won Best New Spirit or Cocktail Ingredient.
Helen David Lifetime Achievement Goes to David Wondrich
The Helen David Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by William Grant & Sons, went to David Wondrich, whose scholarship reshaped how bartenders read their own history. Wondrich’s Imbibe! and Punch set the template for cocktail writing as serious cultural history, and this year he also collected a writing award alongside illustrator Dean Kotz for The Comic Book History of the Cocktail, named Best New Book on Drinks Culture, History, or Spirits.
The Tales Visionary Award, presented by Château Sainte Marguerite, went to Jean Trinh. The Timeless International Award recognized The Bamboo Bar at Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok, and Bryant’s Cocktail Lounge in Milwaukee, open since 1938, took the Timeless U.S. Award.
International Winners: Bar Leone, Satan’s Whiskers, De Vie
Yayo Nava of Bar Mauro in Mexico City was named International Bartender of the Year, presented by Brown-Forman. Bar Leone in Hong Kong won Best International Bar Team, presented by William Grant & Sons, extending its extraordinary run after topping the World’s 50 Best Bars list a year earlier. London’s Satan’s Whiskers took Best International Cocktail Bar by Gruppo Montenegro, while ARGO at the Four Seasons in Hong Kong won Best International Hotel Bar.
Paris got its moment with De Vie, named Best New International Cocktail Bar. Indra Kantono was recognized as Best International Bar Mentor, and Jesse Estes of Tequila Ocho won Best International Brand Ambassador.
U.S. Winners: Takuma Watanabe, Service Bar, Bar Snack
Takuma Watanabe, who splits his time between Martiny’s, L’Americana, and Midnight Blue in New York, was named U.S. Bartender of the Year, presented by Brown-Forman. Washington, D.C.’s Service Bar took Best U.S. Bar Team, and New York’s Bar Snack was named Best U.S. Cocktail Bar by Gruppo Montenegro, giving the city a strong double alongside schmuck., which was named Best New U.S. Cocktail Bar presented by Cutwater.
ViceVersa at the Elser Hotel in Miami won Best U.S. Hotel Bar, presented by Patrón, and Columbus, Ohio’s Cobra took Best U.S. Restaurant Bar, another sign that the American cocktail conversation continues to widen well beyond the coasts. Amanda Gunderson and Travis Nass shared Best U.S. Bar Mentor, and Benny Hurwitz of Campari American Whiskies won Best U.S. Brand Ambassador.
Writing and Media
Imbibe was named Best Cocktail & Spirits Publication, continuing its long run as one of the category’s most consistent titles. Amour Drink took Best Broadcast, Podcast, or Online Video Series, and Rich Manning’s VinePair feature “Thinking Differently: Neurodivergent Bartenders Thrive Behind the Stick” won Best Cocktail & Spirits Writing. Irene Yoo’s Soju Party: How to Drink (and Eat!) Like a Korean was named Best New Cocktail or Bartending Book.
What the 2026 Class Signals
Two things stand out from this year’s list. First, Asia’s grip on the top of the global bar hierarchy is not loosening: FURA taking World’s Best Bar, alongside wins for Bar Leone, ARGO, and Allegory, accounts for the biggest headlines of the night. Second, the U.S. winners map a country that is no longer just New York and San Francisco with everywhere else in the middle. Columbus, Milwaukee, Miami, and Washington, D.C. all took home hardware, and Tales’ own theme for the year, “Spark,” seems less like a slogan than an accurate read of where creative energy is landing in 2026.
