A former car mechanic's shop on the edge of Trastevere, the name means 'brakes and clutches', Freni e Frizioni keeps its industrial bones: high ceilings, rugged walls, vintage automotive scraps. Under Riccardo Rossi it has grown from casual aperitivo spot (the generous vegetarian buffet remains a draw) into a technical powerhouse, and the current Travel With Us menu drinks through world neighborhoods from the French Quarter to Shoreditch. No.31 on Europe's 50 Best Bars 2026. It sits at No. 62 on The 50 Best Bars 51-100 list in 2026, after No. 58 on the 51-100 list in 2025.

Italy's first secret bar, opened in 2010 by a group of bartenders on a mission to revive forgotten cocktail traditions, entry is by password, distributed through the newsletter. The project has entered the World's 50 Best Bars six times, created Vermouth del Professore with Distillerie Quaglia in 2013, and runs its own bartending school in collaboration with Campari Academy. It placed No. 98 on The World's 50 Best Bars 51-100 list in 2025.

Salotto 42 is a cocktail bar on Piazza di Pietra, facing the columns of the second-century Temple of Hadrian a short walk from Via del Corso. Argot is a late-night cocktail bar behind an unmarked door on Via dei Cappellari, near Campo de' Fiori, open from 10pm to 4am. The room mixes bare brick and exposed pipes with old armchairs and lace doilies, and the list runs from classics and twists to house creations served in vintage crystal. Entry is for members of the Arci association, as at several of Rome's private-club bars.

Bar della Musa is the bar of Palazzo Talìa, a hotel in a sixteenth-century palazzo by Largo del Nazareno whose public rooms were designed by film director Luca Guadagnino. The bar has a multicoloured marble counter, bent-wood rattan chairs, smoked mirror panels and a painted ceiling of grotesques, and from Thursday to Saturday it runs an oyster happy hour at aperitivo time.

Club Derrière is a speakeasy at the back of Osteria delle Coppelle near the Pantheon, entered through a wardrobe in the restaurant or by a side door on Vicolo delle Coppelle. Booking is required, and the password needed to get in is given when you book. House rules ask for no photos and no phones, and the cocktails are original combinations such as gin with sage, raspberry and cocoa.

Etere is the rooftop bar of Palazzo Ripetta, a hotel in a seventeenth-century former convent between Piazza del Popolo and Piazza di Spagna. The Barber Shop is a members' speakeasy on Via Iside near the Colosseum, reached through what looks like a barber's shop, with the bar in the basement below. It opens late, from 11pm to 4am.

The Bvlgari Bar is the cocktail bar of the Bvlgari Hotel Roma, entered from Via di Ripetta 73, where the black marble counter is set with 110 Murano glass twirls hand-blown with gold dust by Barovier&Toso. In fine weather it spills onto an outside bar and two terraces, one facing Via di Ripetta and the other Piazza Augusto Imperatore. The same drinks list is served upstairs on La Terrazza, the hotel's rooftop of pergolas and enamel pots, with views from Villa Medici and Trinità dei Monti to the Tiber and the Janiculum. The bar opens daily from 5pm to 1am and the rooftop from 6pm to midnight.

Brothers Diego and Dario Ferracani opened The Race Club in 2015 in a Via Labicana space that has been a charcoal shop (1870), a recording studio (1957) and a gambling den (1974). It's a members-only speakeasy crossing 1930s atmosphere with a mechanical-workshop aesthetic; drinks run through 'RaceGPT', the club's personalized bespoke list, and the Doppio Giro deal serves two cocktails for €30.
