Six speakeasies in Rome, including one on The World's 50 Best Bars and one Spirited Awards nominee.

Italy's first secret bar, opened in 2010 by a group of bartenders on a mission to revive forgotten cocktail traditions, entry is by password, distributed through the newsletter. The project has entered the World's 50 Best Bars six times, created Vermouth del Professore with Distillerie Quaglia in 2013, and runs its own bartending school in collaboration with Campari Academy. It placed No. 98 on The World's 50 Best Bars in 2025.
Argot is a late-night cocktail bar behind an unmarked door on Via dei Cappellari, near Campo de' Fiori, open from 10pm to 4am. The room mixes bare brick and exposed pipes with old armchairs and lace doilies, and the list runs from classics and twists to house creations served in vintage crystal. Entry is for members of the Arci association, as at several of Rome's private-club bars.
Club Derrière is a speakeasy at the back of Osteria delle Coppelle near the Pantheon, entered through a wardrobe in the restaurant or by a side door on Vicolo delle Coppelle. Booking is required, and the password needed to get in is given when you book. House rules ask for no photos and no phones, and the cocktails are original combinations such as gin with sage, raspberry and cocoa.
Sacripante Gallery is an art gallery in an eighteenth-century former convent on Via Panisperna in Monti, built by Cardinal Sacripante, which hosts exhibitions, talks and design presentations. Behind the gallery rooms is a cocktail bar styled as an abandoned old pharmacy, with apothecary bottles and medicine cabinets, where the list keeps mainly to classics served in vintage glassware.
The Barber Shop is a members' speakeasy on Via Iside near the Colosseum, reached through what looks like a barber's shop, with the bar in the basement below. The vaulted brick room has chesterfield sofas, candles and the original barber's chairs on a checkered floor, and the list mixes house originals with classics such as the Penicillin. It opens late, from 11pm to 4am.
Brothers Diego and Dario Ferracani opened The Race Club in 2015 in a Via Labicana space that has been a charcoal shop (1870), a recording studio (1957) and a gambling den (1974). It's a members-only speakeasy crossing 1930s atmosphere with a mechanical-workshop aesthetic; drinks run through 'RaceGPT', the club's personalised bespoke list, and the Doppio Giro deal serves two cocktails for €30.
These are the speakeasies specifically. The full Rome guide ranks the best bars of every style, and the directory lists all 28 with a map and filters.
