Alexis Ortega of Philadelphia has been crowned the 2026 U.S. Bartender of the Year at the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation Presents World Class Sponsored by Diageo National Finals, held in Chicago May 11-13. The title earns him a seat at the World Class Global Finals in Scotland this fall, where he will compete against the best bartenders from more than 50 countries.
How Ortega Claimed the Title
Fifteen of the nation’s top bartenders converged on Chicago for three days of back-to-back challenges built to stress-test creativity, technical precision, and composure under pressure. Over the first two days, all competitors tackled three rounds: a heritage-driven cocktail built on Ketel One Vodka, a trending coffee cocktail featuring Mr Black Coffee Liqueur, and a high-stakes eight-minute Speed Round requiring six Diageo cocktails judged on balance, efficiency, skill, and hospitality.
The top five scorers advanced to a final stage featuring two additional challenges centered on Tequila Don Julio Blanco and Tanqueray No. TEN. Ortega navigated every stage with the kind of storytelling-meets-precision approach that has defined his more than 20 years behind the bar.
“World Class challenged me in all the best ways, pushing me to think on my feet, trust my instincts and bring my perspective as a storyteller behind the bar,” Ortega said. “I’m grateful for the amazing community of peers who want to see you grow, succeed and raise the craft together. Representing the U.S. at the Global Finals is an incredible honor, and I’m ready to bring that same energy and a little dancing to the world stage.”

The Winning Cocktails
Two signature serves carried Ortega to the top of the leaderboard, each built around a different spirit and a clear narrative logic.
FIRST CALL
The coffee-round entry bridges bittersweet depth with citrus brightness, the Tequila Don Julio Reposado adding just enough barrel warmth to round the edges of Mr Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur. It’s built long, carbonated, and refreshing — a morning-shift fantasy made competition-ready.
Ingredients
1 oz Mr Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur
.5 oz Tequila Don Julio Reposado
.5 oz Grapefruit Syrup
1 Dropper Saline (20%)
Grapefruit Soda
Grapefruit Wedge for Garnish
Preparation
Combine Mr Black Coffee Liqueur, Tequila Don Julio Reposado, grapefruit syrup and saline in a shaker with ice and shake thoroughly. Double strain into a Collins glass with ice. Top with grapefruit soda and garnish with grapefruit wedge.

MELONE DI BELLA VISTA
The final-round stirred serve puts Tanqueray No. TEN at the center, leaning into the gin’s botanical clarity while concentrated honeydew melon and Centerbe layer in fresh, unexpected sweetness. The compressed melon garnish ties the visual to the flavor.
Ingredients
1 oz Tanqueray No. TEN
.5 oz Chamomile Bitter Bianco
.75 oz Concentrated Honeydew Melon
.5 oz Centerbe
.25 oz Melon Liqueur
Compressed Melon Garnish
Preparation
Add all ingredients in a mixing glass and stir well. Strain over a large ice cube in a rocks glass and garnish with compressed melon.

A Landmark First Season for the Partnership
This year’s competition marked the inaugural season of the collaboration between Diageo and the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, a pairing designed to reframe World Class as more than a contest. The shared vision positions the program as a platform for education, mentorship, community, and career advancement.
“The level of talent on display this year reflects just how exceptional the U.S. bartending community continues to be,” said Erin Creighton, Director of Marketing for On-Premise at Diageo. “What made this moment even more exciting is that it marked our first season alongside the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, where our commitment to elevating this community and creating meaningful opportunities for bartenders to grow really shined. Alexis brought his distinct perspective and a precision to craft, and we’re proud to see him carry that momentum forward as he represents the U.S. on the road to the Global Finals.”
Charlotte Voisey, Executive Director of the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, echoed that framing: “The U.S. Finals was an incredible showcase of what we set out to build in our first season presenting World Class sponsored by Diageo, a program that celebrates craft, community and the individuality of each bartender. From the very first challenge, Alexis demonstrated not only skill, but a real sense of identity behind the bar.”
What’s Next for Ortega and the Finalists
Ortega now heads to Scotland for the World Class Global Finals this fall, carrying the U.S. title into a field drawn from more than 50 competing nations. The remaining Top 15 finalists will not disappear from the World Class ecosystem: the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation’s Tales Scholarship program will support the full cohort at Tales of the Cocktail 2026 in New Orleans (July 19-24), continuing the partnership’s stated investment in bartender growth beyond the competition floor.
For bartenders looking to enter the next cycle, applications for the 2027 U.S. season will be announced at World Class US, with ongoing updates from the road to Scotland at @WorldClassUS on Instagram.
Philadelphia’s Finest on the World Stage
Ortega’s win plants a Philadelphia flag on the global cocktail competition map. His two-decade career, built on the conviction that elevated craft and genuine hospitality are not opposing forces, is exactly the kind of bartending story the new Diageo-TOTCF partnership was designed to amplify. Scotland this fall will be a serious test, but the U.S. is sending someone who already knows how to tell a story across 50 countries worth of judges.
