Pioneering Neapolitan Mixology at L’Antiquario

In the heart of Naples, Alex Frezza has been transforming the local bar scene with his speakeasy, L’Antiquario. For over a decade, this venue has become a cornerstone of classical early 20th-century bar culture, driven by Frezza’s passion and ingenuity.

What inspired you to create L’Antiquario?

From my early days in hospitality, I was drawn to the timeless elegance of early 20th-century bars. L’Antiquario was born from a desire to recreate that classic atmosphere—a place where anyone can enjoy the simplicity and beauty of well-crafted cocktails. The opportunity came when I found a small antique shop, which we transformed into this hidden gem.

How did you enter the world of bartending?

My journey began at fourteen, working in hospitality. I later ventured into architecture but was captivated by the cocktail world, leading to the creation of my Cocktail Catering Company. I learned by observing and reading anything I could get my hands on, significantly from observing other bartenders in major European cities.

What do you believe is the key to L’Antiquario’s success?

Consistency and an unwavering commitment to quality are at the heart of L’Antiquario’s success. We focus exclusively on classic cocktails and champagne, ensuring each drink is crafted to perfection. Our approach to hospitality—making each guest’s experience memorable and personalized—also sets us apart.

What does the word ‘hospitality’ mean to you?

Hospitality, for me, is about creating a welcoming atmosphere where guests feel valued and cared for. It’s about exceeding expectations and ensuring that every guest leaves with a smile. It’s an intentional system of actions that make people feel at ease, especially when they’re far from home.

What are you looking for in a bartender who wants to work at L’Antiquario?

I look for someone who is not only skilled but also passionate about bartending. They should be eager to learn and grow, understanding the sacrifices the job entails. It’s not about being a finished product but about having the potential and desire to improve continually.

How do you see the cocktail scene in Naples?

Naples has a dynamic and diverse bar scene that reflects its people’s love for life. Over the past decade, the level of sophistication in cocktails has risen significantly, with bars focusing more on signature cocktails and quality spirits. It’s a city that thrives all year round, with a bar scene as lively and varied as its culture.

Lastly, any future plans you can share with us?

Moving forward, I’m focusing on refining L’Antiquario’s operations to ensure it remains at the forefront of the cocktail scene. Additionally, I’m considering expanding by opening another bar, where we can continue to offer top-notch experiences and perhaps work only six months a year to balance life and work better.

Alex Frezza’s passion for classic elegance and quality mixology has made L’Antiquario a cornerstone of Naples’ nightlife. His vision for the future of bartending blends tradition with innovation, promising exciting developments for cocktail enthusiasts everywhere.
